The Winning Snap

Dropknee Quarter Final One at the 2011 Encanto Pro in Puerto Rico will forever be known as the heat that Damian King won the IBA Dropknee World Title and became the first duel World Bodyboard Champion ever.

His opponent from the Canary Islands, Ardiel Jimenez, was ahead of Kingy for most of the heat. With about three minutes left, a set pulsed in, King had priority and let Jimenez take the first wave. He took the second and fell off in front of Jimenez. Thinking the fall had cost him his dream, King quickly paddled out the back and retained priority.

In the waning seconds of the heat, a wedging left popped up in front of Damian. He used his priority and put everything on the line with a powerful backside snap in the pocket, sending bucket loads of spray into the air, then bottom turned again and did a smaller snap. In the competitors area, his Australian friends with cans of beer in their hands waited for his score to drop. The winning score was announced and they raced to the waters edge to shower their mate in beer.

As Kingy took off on his winning wave, most photographers were focused on title hopefuls Cesar Bauer and Dave Hubbard in the competitors area and missed the shot. Thankfully Micah McMullin had his eyes, and lens, on the water. So here it is, Damian King’s World Title winning snap.

King Claims Crown

Two time Mens World Champion Damian King has clinched his maiden Dropknee World Title at the Encanto Pro in Puerto Rico today, making him the first rider ever to win both World Titles. King had to advance through his Quarter Final match up against Ardiel Jimenez to gain enough points over multiple DK World Champion Dave Hubbard and 2010 DK World Champion, Cesar Bauer to secure the title.

With just over one minute remaining, King needed a score of 6.8 to progress. As he took off on what looked to be the best wave of the heat, the crowd held their breath and rose to their feet, but unexpectedly, King lost his balance and fell.

“I wanted to give up a few times in that heat, especially towards the end. I was always one step behind from the start,” King explained. “When I paddled back out after falling on that last big one, I thought it was over. I was so tired, but refused to give up.”

With only seconds to go, King managed to find an inside left and did one of the most critical backside turns of the day, earning him enough to clinch the win.

“I paddled so hard to get into that left, but once I saw the cup on the end of it, I knew it was on. I was on my backhand, so I just gave my all. I actually almost pushed too hard and lost it, but managed to hang on. I was not sure if I was going to get the score.”

The judges deemed it a 6.9 out of a possible 10 points, pushing King into the lead as the siren signaled the end of the heat. King dedicated the win to his father in law Jimbo, who had been traveling to events with him for the past few months.

The Dropknee Semi Finals will feature Damian King vs. Amaury Lavernhe and Cesar Bauer vs. Dave Hubbard. Stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter for updates and live results.

DK World Champion!

Damian King is the 2011 IBA Dropknee World Tour Champion! Kingy needed to beat Ardiel Jimenez in the Quarter Finals to take an unassailable lead in the ratings, claim the title and become the first duel World Champion in history.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing though. Jimenez led the Encanto Pro Quarter Final bout until 30 seconds before the siren when King, who was chasing a 6.8, paddled into his heat winning wave with seconds left on the clock. He got up backside, bottom turned and did a massive snap, throwing a solid chunk of water over the back of the wave, then finished with another snap.

The Australians in the competitors area waited for what seemed like an eternity for the scores to drop… a 6.9, he did it! They grabbed cans of beer and ran to the waters edge to meet King and showered him in celebration. He was hoisted onto their shoulders and carried to the presentation area.

Kingy spoke to the crowd after receiving his trophy, telling how he thought he had lost the title when he fell off on a set moments before he caught his winning wave. An emotional King thanked his father in law, who has been travelling with him to the last few events, and started to choke up when explaining how important he was to his success.

The International Bodyboarding Association caught up with Damian as he walked off the winners podium, click here to read the full interview. Congratulations Kingy!
